Elavon, why’d you do us like that?
sigh… The recent Elavon crisis (read our blog post HERE) finally culminated at the end of May with all of their CBD merchant accounts being shut down. Inside reports put the number of businesses affected at around 8,000. This has left an industry scrambling, plenty of fly-by-night companies looking to take advantage of the situation, and an entire industry pleading for solutions. Until companies like Authorize.net, Square, or Stripe are able to facilitate the needs of the hemp industry, we’ve been forced to find patched solutions to ensure our clients can continue selling their legal products online.
Technology shapes behavior, which is how “best practices” are sometimes created – and since the dawn of e-commerce, the user experience has been pretty standard. User goes to website, selects the product they want, and check out with a credit card when they’re ready to complete the purchase. It’s hard to force that behavior to change, and sometimes, when something is different, the instinct is to panic and leave. Our current predicament which has made it so difficult to find reputable merchant services, so we’ve opted to take a step backwards and offer e-check solutions. This is for sure a curve-ball to normal UX, but what we’ve found is that brand loyalty is winning over complicated payment processes. In this instance, the user inputs bank routing information at the end of check out and a direct deposit is made. It’s simple enough, but not the normal process.
What is e-check?
An e-check (or electronic check) is an electronic version of a paper check used to make payments online. Anyone with a checking account can pay by e-check. When making a payment through e-check a user is asked to provide account and bank routing numbers, which sounds scary, but really is as secure as it gets.
